Nurturing creativity
Creativity can generally be defined as, “The capacity to see, shape and order the world in ways that are distinctively your own” (Herzog via sesameworkshop.com). Creativity involves the adaptation and flexibility of thought.
Similar to curiosity, it is believed that children are born with the potential for creativity and a number of factors influence its development within your child.
The support and encouragement provided by parents and other adults, as well as the presence of a learning environment appear to have a major effect.
As your child develops and begins to express themselves through play, fantasy and problem solving your child may play imaginative games and envision their own fun and interesting reality.
Your child invents ideas by following a unique route of thinking. Or may paint, draw, play an instrument or otherwise express their own unique thoughts. Research tells us that these games and play often become an outlet for emotional expression as a child develops into childhood.
In adult years, development of creativity from childhood can be a valuable problem-solving tool or an integral element to many personal or professional endeavours.
By providing an environment that allows your child to explore and play without undue restraints, and by adapting to your child’s ideas rather than trying to structure them to fit your own. Allows you to accept unusual ideas by suspending judgment of your child’s divergent problem-solving, and allows time for your child to explore all possibilities, and nurture their own self creativity.
