Encouraging your child´s sense of self

When a child is not reacting to direction or seems to not listen, it is often because they are trying to sort out their own reactions and feelings (Brazelton 2006).

In early toddler years, commencing around eighteen months, your child’s personality begins to emerge and become ever more apparent. In parallel with personality, comes a fledgling sense of independence, and it is often around this time in your child’s development that “no” becomes a favorite word. This reaction and negative response to a majority of requests, questions, and wishes is typically not out of defiance to you, but rather the result of desire for personal control.

Allowing your child their own space and providing them some degree of control will help your child develop a greater sense of self.

At the same time, allowing your child space to discover and explore will also help your child to begin to assess and control their own reactions and emotions, questions, and decisions.

Products which can perform this role, or help encourage your child to take greater control and assess their own reactions in a safe non determining environment are naturally of great benefit to the development of self, personality, and independence.
